Hwang, who is director of the Alternative Cooling Technologies and Application Consortium in the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE), works extensively in refrigerant alternatives research, particularly involving carbon dioxide. His research focuses on developing comprehensive information for the detailed physics of transport processes, new cost-effective test methods, and innovative components and systems. Hwang is an active member of ASME, the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and Society of Automobile Engineer (SAE).
As an editorial board member for Energy, Hwang will help maintain and improve the standards and the quality of the journal by lending his expertise to reviewing paper submissions and contributing to the published research. According to Energy, "the journal aims to be a leading peer-reviewed platform and an authoritative source of information for analyses, reviews and evaluations related to energy, and covers research in mechanical engineering and thermal sciences, with a strong focus on energy analysis, energy modelling and prediction, integrated energy systems, energy planning and energy management."
The ASME 2015 conference Hwang is chairing will be co-located with the ASME 13th Fuel Cell Conference. The event is a world class exchange of innovative technology and research and developments efforts offering a path to renewable solutions. Topics will include everything from photovoltaics, solar buildings and sustainable cities and communities to carbon sequestration, high performance buildings and low/zero emission power plants.
