Dr. Radermacher taught me to ‘have your own plan, or you become part of other people’s plan’. I think that sentence is really powerful and enlightening.

Xiaojie Lin received his Ph.D. from University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Energy Engineering in August 2017. Lin worked in Dr. Yunho Hwang’s ACTA research group, now known as EEHP. Lin’s research focus was on the topic of modeling and controlling of variable refrigerant flow systems in building HVAC applications.

When reflecting on his time at CEEE, Lin highlighted his fondness for the the annual CEEE trip and how it allowed the students and faculty to bond.

“Faculty members and students shared life experiences and discussed out-of-box thoughts and ideas, he said. “Jan would also sometimes tell fun stories of CEEE labs.” He went on to add that some of the most valuable experience from CEEE were two quotes that were shared with him by Dr. Reinhard Radermacher and Dr. Yunho Hwang.

“I remember Dr. Hwang once told us to ‘do something + alpha’, that is, do a bit slightly more than what was required or planned. As time goes on, that ‘alpha’ will lead us to surprise,” Lin reflected. “Dr. Radermacher also taught me ‘have your own plan, or you become part of other people’s plan’. I think that sentence is really powerful and enlightening.”

Prior to attending CEEE, Lin graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Energy Engineering at Zhejiang University, located in the Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province of China.

“It is the capital city of the province, a historic city with wonderful landscape and natural heritage and headquarters of quite a lot Chinese IT giants,” Lin said. Lin’s current title is “distinguished associate research fellow (tenure-track)”. Lin explained that this title is similar to assistant professor in the U.S and his job includes both research and teaching in the area of energy system analysis and optimization, with a special focus in integrated energy systems and district heating.
