I was interested in combining experimental work with simulation work.
When Dongyu Chen started at CEEE in the summer of 2016, he was no stranger to working in a new environment. After receiving his bachelors degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, he moved to the United States to participate in the Mechanical Engineering Master’s program at University of Michigan.
“After I graduated with my masters’ degree, I went back to China,” Chen said. “I applied to several different programs and Dr. Hwang called me for an interview.” After considering his options and having a conversation with Dr. Hwang, it turned out the University of Maryland was the best fit for him.
The location change wasn’t bad either. “It’s much better than Michigan,” Chen said with a laugh. “It’s much warmer here.” He added, “I also like being so close to DC." Chen said he likes the variety of foods available in the city and enjoys getting to try as much as possible.
He wants to combine simulation and experimental work
Over the summer, he completed his most recent project- designing advanced software for refrigeration systems to promote efficiency. The project worked to raise the performance coefficient from 0.7 to 2.6, a marked leap.
Chen said he enjoyed working with his group and found them to be helpful sounding boards. He is starting something new this semester and wants to work on something in the same vein as his previous undertaking.
“I told Dr. Hwang during my initial interview that I was interested in combining experimental work with simulation work,” said Chen. He says he hopes his next project will have that balance.
