CEEE Welcomes New Researcher
Story by Francesca Pascual
Dr. Farah Singer, faculty research associate, is the newest addition to CEEE’s staff. Not only is she working on enhanced and advanced heat exchangers, she is also focused on additive manufacturing. “With additive manufacturing, I can build a 3-D object layer by layer using a 3-D digital model created using computer software. I am incorporating it into my work on advanced and revolutionary thermal management devices,” she explains. In addition to those tasks, Singer is working with Dr. Michael Ohadi on energy auditing for campus buildings, and coordinates and supervises a team made up of undergraduate and graduate student. Every semester, this group focuses on four or five buildings on campus that are considered not energy efficient. “This is an important project because it has the potential to save money throughout the entire campus,” Singer states.
Before coming to the United States, she earned her bachelor’s and master's degree in her home country at the Lebanese University in Beirut, Lebanon, and earned her Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences at the University of Poitiers in Poitiers, France. There, Singer studied near field radiative heat transfer. “I was interested in solving theoretical problems at nano-scales in radiative heat transfer. Most methods result in numbers that are not physical, meaning they all lead to infinity eventually. My study proposed ways to correct those theoretical methods,” she explains.
Although Singer enjoyed her time in France, she prefers living in the United States. “Everything here feels informal, and all the people are friendly. I adjusted to life in the United States after just a few weeks,” she says. Singer enjoys shopping, watching movies, and visiting new places and cities, especially if her routes are walkable.
