CEEE’s industrial sponsors are invited to an engaging workshop that will explore current state-of-the-art developments and challenges in data center cooling. Leaders from academia and industry will share pre-competitive breakthroughs and ongoing research on ways to reduce cooling system size while increasing overall energy efficiency. The nearly 12,000 data centers in operation worldwide account for 4% of global energy consumption as of April 2025, with no signs of slowing. Society’s increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to require a surge in cooling capacities for data center racks, up to 5-10 times 2023 levels.1
The goal of this workshop is to seek input from CEEE sponsors to identify future research directions to support our sponsors. The workshop will begin with presentations by UMD faculty and external invited speakers that will highlight the state of the art and future needs of data center cooling.
This in-person workshop is available only to CEEE sponsors and precedes the Fall 2025 Consortium Meetings. To facilitate interactive discussion we are offering the workshop for in-person participation only.
